The equation of motion is derived by defining a Lagrangian of motion and minimizing the action functional. Force is found from the equation of motion and the .-dimensional divergence theorem applied to the gradient of the energy.

Predators, parasites and disease, ..A Taylor expansion of the energy function for finite deformations of isotropic bodies is shown to yield the standard equations of linear elasticity. Linear elasticity restricts deformations to small amounts and small rotations. A representation of the energy of isotropic bodies for small deformations and large rotations is derived.

Getting Ready (Mostly Review),The basic equations of linear algebra and Newtonian physics that will be needed in future chapters are reviewed. Terms specific to material elasticity are defined (e.g. a continuous body, isotropic and anisotropic materials, homogeneous and non-homogeneous materials.)
