Segmentation Using Two-Step Cluster Analysisbrow (1975), to theories of distributed cognitive processing modelled after today’s computer networks (eg Hunt & Landsman, 1985). Recently, there has been increased interest in considering the human information processing system as a purely abstract computational system with properties that are only formally specified (eg Anderson, 1983).

As an introduction to the description of what I have called the Efficiency Model (Heemstra, 1984), the current state of several concepts has to be considered. Those concepts are Efficiency, Effort, and Intensity of processing.

Do Cardiovascular Changes Indicate Energetic Support of Information Processing?e? How can we understand the reports of fatigue, energy, and effort that volunteers offer to “explain” their performance? One approach has been to look inside the organism to find systems which regulate such “energy” and relate them to performance and subjective report. This chapter suggests a current perspective within this approach.
