In particular, I will report research concerning the factors that lead to awareness and language switch and I will discuss the functions that they serve as learning parameters in these language learning contexts.

The focus of this review is second language (L2) knowledge, not learning (see reviews in Volume 4).

Language Awareness and Knowledge About Language: An Overviewife’ (James & Garrett, 1992, p. 8). I shall use this definition as a point of reference throughout this chapter. LA and ‘Knowledge about Language’ (henceforth: KAL) will be used interchangeably unless stated otherwise.
