Manacle, Death, Time,I should like to begin this section with a fairly close look at the following poem by Emily Dickinson (it is, I think, a key poem for the understanding both of herself as poet and of our time — a poem in which the personal, subjective experience embodied in it is very clearly also representative of the consciousness of our age):
