Conclusions: Legitimising the Impossible?,ted reconfigurable electronic-optical switching layer, that enables traffic grooming and wavelength conversion in the core region of the GMPLS network. Benefits of the proposed network architecture are analyzed and a brief introduction of the UMBC GMPLS testbed, based on this scheme, follows.

Optical Packet Switchingt technological challenges it faces, OPS holds the promise of a highly reconfigurable, bandwidth-efficient, and flexible optical layer. In this chapter we study some of the architectural and design issues for OPS networks, we examine a number of enabling technologies, and we discuss some of the ongoing research and experimental efforts.
