Friends and Relations and To the North,hange amidst relative stability and Lawrence’s apocalyptic view of a world destined for self-destruction. This English tradition provides the context for Bowen’s primary concerns: the house as province and metaphor of woman’s condition and family relations is now extended to highlight the character of the mother as the bulwark of the family home.
