The division into three wavelength regimes is not hard and fast« For example, important effects arise because of the modification of the magnetostatic modes by exchange interactions.

Surface Brillouin and Raman Scatteringcan be adopted. In fact, surface phonons can be detected which are either externally excited with a variety of different techniques or naturally present in the sample at a finite temperature T due to thermal excitations (thermal noise). The two different methods have been developed rather independently.
