描述Trace metals occur as natural constituents of the earth‘s crust, and are ever present constituents of soils, natural waters and living matter. The biological significance of this disparate assemblage of elements has gradually been uncovered during the twentieth century; the resultant picture is one of ever-increasing complexity. Several of these elements have been demonstrated to be essential to the functions of living organisms, others appear to only interact with living matter in a toxic manner, whilst an ever-decreasing number do not fall conveniently into either category. When the interactions between trace metals and plants are considered, one must take full account of the known chemical properties of each element. Consideration must be given to differences in chemical reactivity, solubility and to interactions with other inorganic and organic molecules. A clear understanding of the basic chemical properties of an element of interest is an essential pre-requisite to any subsequent consideration of its biological significance. Due consideration to basic chemical considerations is a theme which runs through the collection of chapters in both volumes.

Cycling of Trace Metals in Ecosystems, ource of major nutrient cations is weathering of the materials underlying the ecosystem itself and of the rocks and soils to which it is connected by the hydrological cycle. In many cases ecosystems lose more calcium, magnesium, sodium and potassium to stream water output than they gain from the atm

Impact of Metals on Ecosystem Function and Productivity,-contained entity. In his definition, Tansley (1935) emphasized the importance of interactions between the components of the ecosystem; a concept which led to a new impetus in ecological thought and research in attempting to understand the structure and dynamics of such systems.

Reclamation of Metalliferous Mine Wastes, This has resulted from a combination of social, economic and technological factors, in particular the ever-increasing requirement for metalliferous minerals and the ability of modern mining and processing methods to economically exploit ore deposits containing very low concentrations of valuable me

The Effect of Trace Elements on Lower Plants, ants have been described in a wide range of species from diverse habitats, but studies into the possible toxicity of these accumulations have been limited. Cryptogams may be subjected to high metal concentrations as the result of exposure to metal-rich man-effected or natural sources. Some examples

Mechanism of Metal Tolerance in Higher Plants, pulations are said to be metal tolerant. This character has been found amongst both wild and crop species. Wild species often show differentiation into ecotypes which can vary in their degree of tolerance; some cultivars of various crop species also show variation in their degree of tolerances.
