Introduction, and notes. The letters, which are so far unpublished, number more than 1400 in total and date from 1925 to 1962. When I first encountered these letters they were all in disarray; and my preparatory task seemed enormous as I had to put them in chronological order, transcribe them and have them typed.

East and West, of Lafcadio Hearn — there has been no substantial research on this topic, either in Japan or in England. This chapter intends to convey something of the cross-cultural milieu of Blunden and his Japanese friends from 1924 to 1962.

Epilogue,mained unmarried. This may also help to explain why he was so sympathetic to Aki who was one of those unfortunate women in Japan during the late 1920s. Blunden describes the social pressure tacitly imposed upon them in his essay on Japan, written during his second visit to the country in 1950.
