Clara Pliego,Faina Kamilova,Ben Lugtenbergel is positive at low levels of income and negative at higher levels. The influence of different rates of growth of income on inequality has also been examined, but as pointed out by Ahluwalia (1976, pp. 335–7), the available data do not show any significant relationship.

Economic Growth in Historical Perspectivea steady rate of growth of national income, with an endogenous rate of capital accumulation converging to a steady, exogenously given, rate of population growth. This theory of balanced growth was an attempt to explain what was assumed to be a stylised fact of the experience of the developed industrial countries over a long period of time.
