Contact and Dipolar NMR Shifts: Theory and Applications,w-spin d. iron(III) hemin systems and on lanthanide ion complexes. Particular attention is paid to the theoretical and experimental aspects of the temperature dependencies. Mention is made of the use of lanthanide ions and cobalt(II) and substitutional or extrinsic shift probes for the study of biological macromolecules.

The Electronic Ground State of 3d Metal Ions with Respect to the ESR and NMR Experiment, orbitals should be known and the n electrons should be placed in these orbitals according to the Aufbau principle. The relative energies of the d orbitals depend on the metal-donor bond strength and on the symmetry around the metal ion (Fig. 1 and Table 1). Our interest in this chapter will be limited only to systems with net unpaired electrons.

NMR spectroscopy, heat capacity measurements, etc. The interactions which occur in the couple are called exchange interactions. It will be the purpose of this short review to summarize the foundations of exchange interactions and to show how they can be relevant in the interpretation of the ESR and NMR spectra of paramagnetic complexes.

ramers systems recent findings on the MoFe protein of nitro-genase (the biological nitrogen fixing system) will be discussed. Mössbauer and EPR studies of the MoFe protein (30 Fe atoms) have lead to a detailed spectroscopic characterization of two novel spin-coupled metal centers.
