Resistance of Crops to Nematodesn some instances the actual penetration of the nematodes into the roots may be damaging to the plant, although reproduction may be inhibited, and thus a level of tolerance, as well as resistance, to the nematode is required if healthy crops and adequate yields are to be secured.

ol, although often e~~ective, may pose environmental hazards and is relatively expensive, especially in developing countries where it may be completely uneconomic. Control through genetically mediated resistance to diseases and pests, is both cheap and environmentally sa~e and at present most diseas

Carolyn Hamilton,Elizabeth Yarrows is thoroughly confusing; or we can coin new words, though this is also confusing; or we can describe the new concept in terms of analogies. I am now faced with this choice and I propose to use analogies.

Gray Water Footprint and Water Pollutionfects of mixtures of lines or varieties with different resistance genes on the composition of the pathogen population. Such effects are being studied in a project at The Royal Veterinary and Agricultural University, Copenhagen, where a model experiment on the flexibility of a barley powdery mildew population is in progress.

Whose Syndrome? Stories of Medical Eponymson’, and (iii) the ‘common cultivar-race interaction’. Future development may lead to reduced verticality and increased horizontality of agricultural pathosystems. If so, the three-way interaction cultivar-isolate-environment will become more important, with possibly more races in a better stabilized pathosystem.

Whose Syndrome? Stories of Medical Eponyms is little or no evidence for true polygenic resistance. Second, polygenes have been confused with additive variance. Third, there are enough examples of host plants with many resistance genes which even in combinations are ineffective.

Epidemiological Parameters of Plant Resistancegically of greater interest, fitness in particular. But too little is still known to monitor changes in fitness to facilitate resistance management. Also longevity of cultivars cannot yet be assessed and predicted.

Beate Ehret,Dora Szego,Davy Dhondtce can often be shown to be due to race-specificity of resistance genes and the evolution and spread of pathogen races with matching pathogenicity. These race-specific genes may have large (major) or small (minor) effects, giving either complete or quantitative resistance, and may operate at any sta
