Durable Resistance in Crops: Should the Concept of Physiological Races Die?Developments especially in relation to . and P. . force one to question the concept of physiological races, and to suggest an alternative. For simplicity the argument is stated around the gene-for-gene hypothesis, but the argument is quite general.

Durable Resistance and Disease ComplexesThe present paper is an attempt to determine whether the concept of durable resistance (Johnson and Law, 1975) is applicable to disease complexes which are of common occurrence in agro- and eco-parasitic systems.

Problems in Estimating Parasitic Fitnessness comes from the possible effects of density dependent growth of the parasite. The analysis of a mathematical model including density dependence in spore production and in survival of infections has shown that parasitic density has to be taken into account in studies on characteristics of pathosystems.

Theoretical Resistance Modelss is thoroughly confusing; or we can coin new words, though this is also confusing; or we can describe the new concept in terms of analogies. I am now faced with this choice and I propose to use analogies.

Durable Resistance and Host-Pathogen-Environment Interactionon’, and (iii) the ‘common cultivar-race interaction’. Future development may lead to reduced verticality and increased horizontality of agricultural pathosystems. If so, the three-way interaction cultivar-isolate-environment will become more important, with possibly more races in a better stabilized pathosystem.

Whose Syndrome? Stories of Medical Eponymsn some instances the actual penetration of the nematodes into the roots may be damaging to the plant, although reproduction may be inhibited, and thus a level of tolerance, as well as resistance, to the nematode is required if healthy crops and adequate yields are to be secured.
