描述The fifth of the annual research conferences of the American Institute for Cancer Research was held September l-2, 1994, at the L‘Enfant Plaza Hotel in Washington, DC. Appropriately, in view of current directions in research, the theme was "Diet and Cancer: Molecular Mechanisms of Interactions". This proceedings volume contains chapters from the platform presentations and abstracts from the poster session held on the end of the first day. The subtopics for the tl;rree sessions held were "Retinoids, Vitamins A and Din Cancer Prevention and Therapy," "Choline and Lipids: Signal Transduction, Gene Expression and Growth Regulation," and "Dietary Factors and Regulation of Oncogenes, Growth and Differentiation. " A general overview on vitamins A and D emphasized that A and D, in addition to their established roles in vision, reproduction, and bone mineral homeostasis, may play significant roles in regulating cell function. Vitamin A metabolites, trans-retinoic acid and 9-cis-retinoic acid, regulate growth and differentiation. Furthermore, vitamin A deprived animals were more susceptible to both spontaneous and carcinogen-induced tumors. Epidemiological studies showed a correlation betwe

Vitamin A Chemoprevention of Lung Cancer, garettes have a markedly increased risk of developing lung cancer and parenchymal fibrosis. Epidemiologic and experimental studies have shown that dietary vitamin A has significant anticancer and immunomodulatory effects (1-6). However, whether intervention with supplemental vitamin A can reduce the

Human Cervical Cancer,d countries (.). Although the pathogenesis of the disease is incompletely understood, human papillomavirus (HPV) is present in over 90% of all high grade cervical lesions and is strongly implicated in the process of cancer development. A common feature of these tumors is expression of the E6 and E7

Choline and Hepatocarcinogenesis in the Rat, deficiency that, in itself, causes cancer. We suggested that carcinogenesis is triggered, in part, because of abnormalities in cell signals which regulate cell proliferation and cell death. Because choline deficient rats develop fatty liver (choline is needed for hepatic secretion of certain lipopr

Dietary Effects on Gene Expression in Mammary Tumorigenesis, dietary fat to breast cancer incidence, this important health question has not been resolved and has become instead increasingly controversial. Animal studies have strongly suggested that there is a mammary tumor promoting effect of diets high in total fat (approximately 20% fat by weight or 40% fa

Effect of Dietary Fatty Acids on Gene Expression in Breast Cells, model studies support the concept that high fat intake increases breast cancer risk (3–6). However, several cohort studies, in consistent with such an hypothesis have recently been reported (1,7). In addition, attention has focused on the role of specific fatty acids (FA) as enhancers, (i.e. linolei

Lipotrope Deficiency and Persistent Changes in DNA Methylation, almon first reported that long-term feeding of choline deficient diet increased incidence of tumor in the liver and other organs of the rat almost 50 years ago.. Subsequent studies demonstrated that the peanut meal they used in the diet was contaminated with aflatoxin., and it was soon established t
