描述Developmental biology is one of the most exciting and fast-growing fields today. In part, this is so because the subject matter deals with the innately fascinating biological events—changes in form, structure, and function of the organism. The other reason for much of the excitement in developmental biology is that the field has truly become the unifying melting pot of biology, and provides a framework that integrates anatomy, physiology, genetics, biochemistry, and cellular and molecular biology, as well as evolutionary biology. No longer is the study of embryonic development merely “embryology.” In fact, development biology has produced important paradigms for both basic and clinical biomedical sciences. Though modern developmental biology has its roots in “experimental embry- ogy” and the even more classical “chemical embryology,” the recent explosive and remarkable advances in developmental biology are critically linked to the advent of the “cellular and molecular biology revolution.” The impressive arsenal of expe- mental and analytical tools derived from cell and molecular biology, which promise to continue to expand, together with the exponentially developing sophistication

Clonal Analysis in the Examination of Gene Function in ,lineage, fate determination, autonomy of gene action and pattern formation (., .). Clonal analysis has been particularly useful for the study of genes that would be lethal in a homo-zygous mutant state; this approach also makes it possible to recover essential genes in mosaic screens (.).

Application of Antisense Oligodeoxynucleotides in Developing Chick EmbryosOne technique used for perturbing the level of expression of a specific gene is the application of gene-specific antisense oligodeoxyribonucleotides (ODNs). ODNs are a quick, affordable, and effective means to “knock down” the expression of a gene in order to learn more of its function in vivo. It i

Gene Expression Analyzed by Ribonuclease Protection Assays as well as for the analysis of mRNA and gene structure (.). This solution hybridization approach is at least 10-fold more sensitive than Northern blot analysis, and thus is useful for the evaluation of low-abundance mRNAs. Furthermore, the greater stability of the RNA duplex structure over RNA-DNA

Relative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain ReactionPCR), Northern blot analysis, primer extension, and RNA protection assays (.). Because of the PCR amplification step, RT-PCR has the important advantage that little RNA is required. In addition, RT-PCR is a relatively simple procedure that does not have an absolute requirement for the use of radiois

Gene Expression Analysis Using Quantitative Reverse Transcription-Polymerase Chain Reaction and a Musuming task that necessitates the use of carefully controlled amplification procedures. Reverse transcription (RT) of the mRNA to cDNA followed by amplification using the polymerization chain reaction (RT-PCR) is widely used for simple detection purposes, but the procedure can be employed for accura

Whole mount . hybridization allows the rapid global analysis of changes in the spatiotemporal patterns of gene expression. Its use is limited to early developmental stages owing to penetration problems with increasing size of
