Some decisions are strongly conditioned by the decision maker’s situation: when we say “we have no alternative but . . . ”, this means that our power of choice is indeed very limited. But sometimes when we say we have no alternative, what this actually means is that we have not thought enough about the actual possibilities.

Demanding Energy: An Introduction,y called the “penalty shoot-out .” to imply that chance, or randomness, plays an important role in its resolution. We use the same term to refer to more everyday situations, such as whether or not we will be chosen for a particular job, or whether we will be able to avoid heavy traffic on our drive back into the city after a long weekend.
