This clearly is anexciting area in modern medicine that will have significant impact onvarious facets of transfusion. Erythropoietin therapy stimulates redcell production while thrombopoietin seems to positively affectmegakaryopoiesis and can be an added armamentarium for thethrombocytopenic patient. .Using haematnopoietic growth factors, stem cells could be mobilizedearly to the peripheral blood for collection and subsequenttransplantation into haemato-oncology patients instead of bone marrowtransplantation. Using a cocktail of cytokines in cell culture, stemcells could be expanded and selected for therapy. Cytokines and growthfactors can even be modified, which may lead to successful genetherapy in malignancies, including solid tumour vaccines. However, thepresence of cytokines in certain blood products could have biologicaleffects following transfusion, although its clinical relevance needsto be ascertained. There is much potential for the use of cytokines inthe treatment of infections. Early diagnostic methods are nowavailable to monitor their levels and relevance.
