描述.This book covers several related topics anchored in the idea of how meaning is created. The central focus in the book is, however, on how language awareness may help us communicate smoothly and solve social problems. The book takes up language misconceptions and their social significance, and promotes the view that regarding meaning (and language in general) as open and flexible, rather than closed and rigid, may lead to critical thinking, innovation, and creativity. The book covers topics such as words and things, words and emotions, fake news and hate speech, and it has been written in the form of short informal dialogues to engage readers and make linguistic concepts accessible. .

What Does the Word Really Mean? Look It up in the Dictionary!,ovation. Words in themselves don’t mean anything; they only mean something to a particular person. People’s awareness of how language works appears to be scant. What linguists are concerned with is usually misunderstood. Some people tend to argue about what a word really means. Dictionaries give us

Meaning Is Imprecise: It Will Always Be So!,efs are a fantasy. This can be shown, for example, by doing an ‘infinite regress of definitions’ exercise. Other arguments against this fantasy can be brought out. Even when we talk to people that we know very well (like members of the family) we may differ as to what we mean when using the same wor

Viewing some words as signals in some situations fits in Kahneman’s idea of . and . thinking. Missing some words used as signals may be dangerous.

Emotions can be placed along the continuum ‘negative-neutral-positive’. Manipulating emotions through language may change people’s behavior. Emotions released t

Framing: Calling a Dog an Animal Friend, ing. Clever framing may be used to present and promote an idea, a point of view. Framing an idea calls up mental pictures which we are unable to block. Promoting one frame rather than another is reflected in the brain and may have enormous social consequences. Negating a frame (‘he is . a thief’) st
