However, the recent flow of Central Asian “foreign fighters” to conflict zones in Syria and Iraq and the increasing involvement of Central Asians in terrorist attacks outside the region have raised genuine security concerns.

Foreign Terrorist Fightersdes a unique opportunity to study these processes within the national contexts. The experience of these states, duly analyzed, could motivate others to follow suit and repatriate their citizens en masse, contributing to a long-term solution to this challenge.
