描述The source of endless speculation and public curiosity, our scientific quest for the origins of human consciousness has expanded along with the technical capabilities of science itself and remains one of the key topics able to fire public as much as academic interest. Yet many problematic issues, identified in this important new book, remain unresolved. Focusing on a series of methodological difficulties swirling around consciousness research, the contributors to this volume suggest that ‘consciousness’ is, in fact, not a wholly viable scientific concept.  Supporting this ‘eliminativist‘ stance are assessments of the current theories and methods of consciousness science in their own terms, as well as applications of good scientific practice criteria from the philosophy of science. For example, the work identifies the central problem of the misuse of qualitative difference and dissociation paradigms, often deployed to identify measures of consciousness. It also examines the difficulties that attend the wide range of experimental protocols used to operationalise consciousness—and the implications this has on the findings of integrative approaches across behavioural and neurophysiolog

Measures of Consciousness and the Method of Qualitative Differences,be dubious measures of consciousness. Of most interest however are methodological proposals of how to identify an unproblematic measure of consciousness. These include searching for qualitative differences in task performance, and the related strategy of process dissociation, which relies on associa

Converging on Consciousness?,es is to compare and integrate them in order to establish convergent measures. Based on a framework designed to identify differences across experimental paradigms in neuroscience, it is suggested that the different ways that consciousness is measured in fact show that they measure different phenomen

Content-Matching: The Contents of What?,. Criticisms of these accounts are reviewed to illustrate the problems associated with demarcating conscious content in a way that is consistent with reports, behaviours, and properties of the perceptual system. Of most interest is the way that differences between theories of conscious content and d

Scientific Eliminativism: Why There Can Be No Science of Consciousness,he book. Given the misapplication of scientific methods, the failure to identify relevant scientific kinds, and epistemological factors and pragmatic considerations related to scientific practice, I argue that the concept of consciousness does not form a viable scientific concept. In this case it ca
