描述This book is a sequel to Volume 5 of the series, Connective Tissue Matrix. The emphasis in the present volume is on changes which occur in connective tissue matrix and how its components influence biological properties. Changes include alteration of structure and loss of fluid, in response to mechanical loading, and biological changes occurring during development, degeneration and ageing. The chapters illustrate the wide range of disciplines involved in current research but are not intended to provide a comprehensive review of the subject. Volume 11 of the series, Calcified Tissue, deals with related tissues whose composition and properties are modified by calcification.

The Role of Extracellular Matrix in Development,al components of tissues such as bone, cartilage and tendon. In the developing embryo, however, ECM not only participates in the morphogenesis of these tissues, but also has a series of other functions. There is now information showing that ECM provides an environment through which cells can migrate

Electromechanical and Physicochemical Regulation of Cartilage Strength and Metabolism,e is responsible for the synthesis, maintenance and gradual turnover of an extracellular matrix (ECM) composed principally of hydrated collagen fibrils, highly charged proteoglycan molecules (PG) and glycoproteins (Hay, 1981; Muir, 1980). Recent discoveries concerning the genetic expression, metabol

MR Imaging of Connective Tissue Degeneration,is broad in scope and relatively ill-defined. Here we consider specifically ageing and degeneration of connective tissue. This chapter also describes a new method of analysing clinical data which maximizes the discriminative information available from magnetic resonance images. Most of the informati

Dynamic Aspects of Connective Tissue Structure and Function,ne the differences between ageing and degeneration or between degeneration and pathology. Furthermore, even if the distinction were clear, it would often be difficult to separate the effects in practice, since degeneration and pathology of connective tissues are frequently associated with ageing.
