描述.Now in a fully revised and expanded second edition, this comprehensive text remains a timely and major contribution to the literature that addresses the neuromechanisms, predispositions, and latest developments in the evaluation and management of concussive injuries. Concussion, also known as mild traumatic brain injury, continues to be a significant public health concern with increased attention focusing on treatment and management of this puzzling epidemic as well as controversies within the field. The book is comprised of five thematic sections: current developments in evaluation; biomechanical mechanisms; neural substrates, biomarkers, genetics and brain imaging; pediatric considerations; and clinical management and rehabilitation. .Since the publication of the original edition in 2014, much has changed regarding the current understanding of mild traumatic brain injury including development of more precise imaging modalities, development and classification of new biomarkers, and updates to clinical treatment and management of athletic concussion. This new edition will include new chapters targeting the influence of genetics on concussive injury, as well as an expansion on the

Biomechanical Studies of Impact and Helmet Protectiontivities have a well-established effect on reducing the risk of moderate-to-severe head injury, but the additional potential for helmets that have satisfied that objective to prevent concussion is unclear. In many contact and collision sports, there is a clear risk of concussion but with the minimal

Acute and Lingering Impairments in Post-Concussion Postural Control weeks post-injury. Impairments in postural control are a cardinal symptom following sports-related concussion; however, many studies suggest that these impairments resolve within 3–5 days post-injury based on clinical measures. Multiple recent studies, utilizing diverse and sophisticated research p

The Role of the Playing Surface in Mitigating the Deleterious Effects of Head Impacts in Field Sport influenced by the type of playing surface, but only recently has it been postulated that the surface may have a role in the incidence of head injuries. Unfortunately, the current standards for athletic surfaces do not incorporate our present understanding of head impact thresholds and exposure limi

Advanced Neuroimaging of Mild Traumatic Brain Injuryllenge as does the ability to predict duration and extent of disability. Advanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) methods combined with improved data analytic techniques have already demonstrated the potential to meet this challenge. This chapter reviews the recent progress in detection and outcome

Analytical Monitoring of Brain Metabolism: Not a Research Tool for Elite Academy but an Essential Isymptoms recover spontaneously within days to weeks but may also last for a much longer time. At the time of impact, the mechanical forces transmitted to the brain initiate a complex series of chained biochemical pathways, modifying proteins and gene expressions, mitochondrial functions, energy metab
