描述The current proliferation of scientific information makes it difficult for even the most diligent reader to keep up with the latest developments in his/her own field, let alone other areas of interest. Review articles are one solution, but they too have become so voluminous and detailed that they often defeat the purpose for which they were intended. We have attempted to ease this problem by using a different format. In this volume on Concepts in Viral Pathogenesis, we have assembled a series of mini-reviews/editorials, 1,000 to 2,000 words in length. Each is a pithy distil lation of the state-of-the-art with emphasis on current thinking and unifying concepts rather than a compendium of the literature. The 53 articles, all written by active workers in their respective fields, are organized systemati cally so that the book will provide busy investigators, teachers and students of up-to-date information in a very brief and easily read a conceptual core able form. In addition, the authors have attempted to identify unresolved problems and point to future directions.

Wouter Jongeneel,Emmanuel Moulayovirus are known to confer susceptibility on human and some primate cells, while cells of other species lack receptors and are resistant to infection [1]. Although postattachment restrictions are known, virtually all viruses appear to be restricted initially by appropriate receptor expression on the

Double Semion Model as a Quantum Memoryologic research has been devoted to describing strategies used by different viruses to survive despite attempts by the host to prevent their replication. One hypothesis holds that virus attachment to host cell molecules unique to susceptible cells governs virus spread to, and infection of, specific

Topological Orders with Spins and Fermionstes of appropriate viral specificity, followed by stages of penetration, uncoating, and replication of the viral genome. With most infections, antiviral antibody will inhibit the initial binding step, and in so doing, will reduce viral infectivity. However, in certain cell—virus interactions, the pr

An excellent review of general principles related to animal virus attachment has been written recently by Holmes [3]. A key issue in relating host-cell molecules to virus attachment is identification of the “productive rece
