Mathematics: Theory & Applicationsty is closely related to the concept of parallelism. The scope of a process within a system depends on the level of abstraction from which the system is considered, and the more the processes are independent of one another the more decomposition of a system into parallel processes is useful.

Mathematics: Theory & Applications However, some of the solutions to these problems are specific to distributed systems. Without claiming complete coverage of the subject, this chapter presents some example problems and a few possible solutions.

Automorphisms and Galois Theory,ce provided by the physical channel and the different protocol sublayers into which a link protocol may be divided, as outlined in section 4.2.1. Similar considerations also apply to the lower protocol layers of local area networks with broadcast transmission..

Constant and Separable Extensions, makes abstraction of any physical fragmentation of the system into several components. For the major part of the chapter, the notion of parallel processes is irrelevant, only quasi-parallel state transitions are considered.

Distributed Systems: Examples and Definitionbuted under certain aspects. This chapter presents some common examples of data processing and computing systems and discusses in particular the aspects of parallelism and distribution of control and data. Some classification schemes are explained, and a definition of “distributed systems” is attempted.

Architecture of Distributed Systemsncerned with the communication between the distributed components, exchanging data over great distances, and controlling the synchronization and consistency of the operations performed at different locations. This section deals in particular with this communications aspect of a distributed system.

Message Transport Requirements and Data Transmission Networksovided at the interface of the transport subsystem. Depending on the applications, different communication requirements are encountered. These requirements may be characterized (i) by the way in which a communication partner is identified and selected, and (ii) by the following points:
