描述Chicano English in Context is the first modern, comprehensive study of Chicano English, a variety spoken by millions of Latinos in the U.S. It is also one of the first studies of ongoing sound change within an ethnic minority community. It briefly describes the phonology, syntax and semantics of this variety, and explores its crucial role in the construction of ethnic identity among young Latinos and Latinas. It also corrects misconceptions in how the general public views Chicano English.

Sociolinguistics of Chicano English I: Phonetic Variation, nglo English (CAE) speaker and a Chicano English speaker, revealed evidence of/u/-fronting, a sound change taking place in the local Anglo community of Southern California. In this chapter, I will explore the distribution of this sociolinguistic variable in more detail, as well as looking at two other local variables,/æ/-backing and /æ/-raising.

Its basic inventory of phonemes is very similar to those of other dialects. Some segments might be realized slightly differently in CE, but often these differences are subtle. Moreover, intonation and stress pat

Rainer Diaz-Bone,Udo Kelle,Jo Reichertzriables. Some of the more interesting recent studies (for instance, Rickford and McNair-Knox 1994) have looked at both types of variables at once. Comparing the patterns of different types of sociolinguistic variables within the same community can provide a more complete picture of how speakers use
