To examine this question, a program was written which uses a conventional . minimax search procedure but employs an evaluation function and tree-pruning heuristics which are specifically tailored for the endgame.

The development of specialized computer hardware, such as the chess-specific central processor which is being developed at MIT, will further benefit this “brute-strength” approach.
