https://doi.org/10.1007/978-3-531-91339-1If a low tissue PO. is the immediate stimulus for the cheomreceptive process, one has to look for a mechanism that produces a low local PO. in the carotid body in spite of the high blood flow through it. It has been suggested that the low PO. may be brought about by large diffusion distances within the carotid body (1,2).

One problem is that there is little information about the behavior of carotid body (type I or II) cells.
