Synthesis of graphite intercalation compounds a comparison with intercalation into other host lattices and, if possible, as a starting point of new syntheses. It partly develops ideas which were put forward at the 1st Conference on GIC, in La Napoule, 1977. I apologize to those uncited authors whose work merits being cited in a true review of GIC.
