Development of the Science/Politics Interface in the Antarctic Treaty and the Role of Scientific Advoil production was used to finance research, especially hydrology and biological research pertaining to the welfare of whaling stocks in the southern ocean. The British . expeditions which led to an accumulation of much data and new knowledge was basically motivated by resource management concerns. Thus the economic motive fed the scientific one.

The Place of Science in an Environmentally Regulated Continentof the environmentalists is to press for more “directed research”, which is something that scientists may not like. However there should be room for dialogue and mutual understanding. It is good that CRAMRA is gone; we are better without it — the preconditions for dialogue and mutual understanding are better now.
