The Effect of Lowered Cardiac Output on Cerebral Blood FlowThe purpose of the present study is to investigate the effect of a simultaneous lowering of cardiac output (CO) and mean systemic arterial pressure (MAP) by ventricular pacing on cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the dog; i.e., to determine if cerebral autoregulation is adequate to maintain CBF in the presence of a concomitant fall in both MAP and CO.

The mechanism of this response is apparently myogenic (12), and it is thought to function physiologically to help maintain capillary hydrostatic pressure within normal limits during fluctuation in venous pressure (6, 12).
