描述In 1992 a Concerted Action Programme (CAP) was initiated byPeter Sijmons with the purpose of intensifying collaborations between16 European laboratories working on plant-parasitic nematodes. Thefour-year programme entitled `Resistance mechanisms againstplant-parasitic nematodes‘ focused on molecular aspects of theinteraction between sedentary nematodes and plants on the model system.Arabidopsis. and on novel resistance strategies. Funding wasprovided mainly for exchange visits between collaborating laboratoriesand for the organization of annual meetings. During the last annualmeeting which was held in May 1996 in Toledo, Spain, Carmen Fenollinitiated the production of this volume. The book presents a series ofup-to-date reviews, each written by one of the participatinglaboratories, which include the scientific progress achieved in theframe of this CAP but are by no means limited in scope to this work.

Breeding for Nematode Resistance in Sugarbeet: A Molecular Approachkes use of repetitive wild beet specific DNA elements that are tightly linked to the resistance gene. The next step of the cloning procedure comprises the construction of representative yeast artificial chromosome (YAC) libraries and the subsequent screening with molecular markers to extract specifi

Orientation and Navigation in Vertebratesly all efforts in understanding the molecular bases for feeding structure establishment are currently devoted to the economically most important cyst and root-knot nematodes. In order to compare their feeding structures with those of other nematodes with different parasitic strategies, this introduc

Orientation and Navigation in Vertebratese tagged gene and cell type is not always obvious. As a complementary approach, genetic analysis, using specific mutants, is now beginning to unravel key genes that are involved in setting up the pattern of cell differentiation in the root. Combining promoter trap analyses with mutant analysis may c

Distinctive cell wall openings are mostly found between the few strongly hypertrophied pericyclic syncytial elements. The ultrastructure of both types of syncytia is v
