Future Transits,ng for the next planetary transit. As a matter of fact, no less than 14 transits of Mercury will occur between 2012 and 2117. We also note that the first planetary transit ever observed was that of Mercury in 1631, viewed by only three persons, one of whom was Pierre Gassendi, the author of the quotation above (Van Helden 1976).
