Amperometric detection relies on the chemical characteristics of specific analytes, while with conductivity detection a bulk property of the separation medium is monitored. The first technique is therefore selective, the second inherently non-selective.

Voltages and Currents,rical insulation of the various parts of the CE set-up becomes problematic, with spontaneous sparking and a risk of serious damage of sensitive electronic components as a result. A high precision and low drift of the applied voltage is of course important for the reproducibility of the migration times of analytes.
