Contribution of Isotope Flux Studies to Understanding the Mechanism of the β-Cell Membranelity and/or an increase in the permeability of other ions such as Na. and/or Ca.. These changes in membrane potential play a key role in the function of various cell types, including the pancreatic β-cell, where they seem to initiate processes leading ultimately to insulin release.

Glucose Suppresses ATP-Inhibited K-Channels in Pancreatic β-Cellse K-channels which are open in low glucose and are closed by a process linked to glucose metabolism. As possibilities, it has been suggested that Ca-activated K-channels are closed by a glucose-induced fall of intracellular free Ca., or that K-channels are closed by metabolic proton production and intracellular acidification..

We have therefore investigated a new insulin-secreting cell line. using the patch-clamp technique in order to study potassium channels and their role in the control of insulin secretion.
