The most common mechanism by which these second messengersfunction is via direct or indirect activation of specific proteinkinases. The current challenge for scientists is to identify thespecific substrates (e.g. metabolic enzymes,Ca.2.+.-regulating proteins, transcription and mitoticfactors) for the many protein kinases, to elucidate the biologicalsignificance of the cell type-specific expression heterogeneity ofsignalling proteins (e.g. membrane receptors, isoenzymes of proteinkinase C, G-proteins) and to unravel the cro | Pindex | Book 1996 |
