Vacuoles isolated from red beet have an ATPase activity (Leigh and Walker 1980; Walker and Leigh 1981) which may be important in the accumulation of sucrose by beet vacuoles .. The present paper describes some of the features of the membrane potential associated with ATP hydrolysis by vacuoles isolated from red beet.
