Analytical Characterization of Vacuolar Membranes from Higher Plantses in osmotic regulation, space filling, deposition of metabolic products, and compartmentation of hydrolytic enzymes. Many of these properties depend on the vacuole membrane which, therefore, deserves comprehensive study. The aims of this chapter, which reports on our initial studies, are :

If it is a weak acid or base which is permeable only in the unionized form, it will distribute according to the pH gradient across the membrane.
