Information and Communications Security involves a central appeal to intuition. As Stebbing had foreseen, rival appeals to intuition are counterpoised against Bergson’s view by Heidegger and Sartre. To complicate matters further, Ayer employs a version of Carnap’s argument against Sartre, whose views on nothingness had resulted from his engagement with Bergson.

Teik Guan Tan,De Wen Soh,Jianying Zhouge is repeated in similar later polemics by Oxford philosophers, especially Ryle and R.M. Hare. Thus, earlier criticisms of Bergsonism become embroiled in proclamations concerning the existence of a divide that separates ‘analytic’ from ‘continental’ philosophy.

Introduction,e in some ways misguided by William James’s and Max Scheller’s attempts to incorporate Bergson’s outlook into Pragmatism and ., respectively. Karin Costelloe-Stephen defended Bergson against Russell’s criticisms, and also, as this book shows, indirectly responded to Stebbing’s and Schlick’s objections.

Prelude: Bergsonism and Anglophone Analytic Philosophy,uenced the Bloomsbury group. Though scholarship turned to either Russell or Bergson in accounting for Virginia Woolf’s conception of the stream of consciousness, this chapter argues that Costelloe-Stephen’s original work (responding to Bergson and Russell) is clearly a more direct influence of Woolf.

William James and the Anglophone Reception of Bergsonism,s to Bergson a ‘radical empiricism’ that moves away from concepts and returns to lived experience. In James’ view, his contemporary philosophy is faced with a choice: Bergson’s radical empiricism or Bradley’s absolute idealism? James opts for the former.

,A Call for Moderation: L. Susan Stebbing’s Critique of Bergson,cal tool, it is incapable of communicating intuition. Bergson therefore cannot avoid radical scepticism. Stebbing’s views predate and prefigure those first developed by Schlick in 1913. This chapter closes by showing how Stebbing’s criticisms were (indirectly) answered by Costelloe-Stephen.
