Physics: Around 1900elvin. Throughout his life he had an over riding goal of making science useful. His effort was apply illustrated with his involvement in telegraphy and efforts to advance the transatlantic cable projects in 1857–1858 and 1865–1866. Physics: 1900–1950came known as the inventor of the Geiger Counter, the instrument they used to measure the alpha radiation.) Rutherford correctly assumed that because the alpha particles were more massive and of atomic dimensions compared to electrons, they would be key to understanding the nature of matter. His intuition was right.
