State Selection,With the fundamental experiment on space-quantization of atoms in magnetic fields [Gerlach and Stern (1924), (1925)] it was demonstrated that atoms in different quantum states (characterized by their magnetic quantum number) can be spatially separated by inhomogeneous magnetic fields and that such fields are well suited for state selection.
