影响因子.This book sheds light on the intimate relationship between built space and the mind, exploring the ways in which architecture inhabits and shapes both the memory and the imagination. Examining the role of the house, a recurrent, even haunting, image in art and literature from classical times to the present day, it includes new work by both leading scholars and early career academics, providing fresh insights into the spiritual, social, and imaginative significances of built space. Further, it reveals how engagement with both real and imagined architectural structures has long been a way of understanding the intangible workings of the mind itself..

Elizabeth Bishop’s House in the Mind: Memory, Imagination, and Interior Space in ‘The End of March’is house are intimately connected with the poet’s mental processes. Drawing both on classical and medieval memory arts, and on the consonances between Bishop’s work and the shadow-boxes constructed by the artist Joseph Cornell, it posits that Bishop’s dream-house does not just enable the creative process, but is coterminous with it.

The editors contextualise these ideas in relation to the influential, post-Heideggerian, phenomenological tradition that is most notably exemplified in the work of Gaston Bachelard. They discuss the long reverberations in literature of classical and medieval ideas which lin
