To determine gas properties as they exist at the test site or at specific locations in the cross section of the flow field requires measurement of parameters within the stream itself.

Of major interest is the use of the arc plasma for flame spraying and as a heat source for material testing. The range of plasma arc applications is illustrated in Fig. 1.

The Plasma Arc,Plasma is a gaseous cloud composed of free electrons, positive ions, neutral atoms and molecules. It has been referred to as “the 4th state of matter” because of its unique properties. Its behavior involves complex interactions between electromagnetic and mechanical forces.
