Sedimentary EnvironmentsIn the reconstruction of ancient sedimentary environments, one uses information gathered both from fossils and from the sediment itself. From this one can visualise the infinite variety of environments which have occurred during the long history of the Earth. One can group these environments into a limited number of categories.

Fossiliferous Horizonsthe exceptional state of preservation of the fossils. Fossil hunters find them very attractive, and for the geologist they are an unequalled source of information on ancient environments and can give great assistance in interpreting deposits of the same age which are less rich in fossils.
