Yael Geron PhD,Ruth Malkinson,Michal Shamai as a time of change and even growth. Waxman concentrates on portraits of ageing by and about women. In this chapter, though the authors selected are female, the presentation of ageing in their work lends itself to a discussion that is more evenly balanced across the genders.

Critical Turning Points in the Middle East short story gave space to the flashback in stories by John McGahern and William Trevor, which allowed for the depiction of social change through the eyes of the older generation. Some contemporary short stories focus more directly on their world, entering into the consciousness of the old and confused in order to give them a voice of their own.

The introduction will look first at general theories of gerontology, then at literary gerontology, before going on to discuss ageing in the Irish context.
