Evidence based on fitting this model to AIDS incidence data in New York City supports the theory that neither HIV epidemic sustains the other. Thus the HIV epidemics in homosexual men and intravenous drug users are only weakly linked and can be modeled as separate epidemics.

The method is illustrated by applying it to an analysis of periodic measurements of T4 and T8 cells and time from seroconversion to AIDS diagnosis.
