Moisture Movement in the Wood Cell Wall, are due to changes in atmospheric humidity and temperature which may be sporadic or somewhat cyclic, or both. Therefore moisture and related gradients are usually present in wood even in its final product form.

Theories of Water Sorption by Wood,The general nature of the sorption isotherm and the thermodynamics of moisture sorption by wood have been discussed in Chapters 1 and 2, respectively.
