描述.Various parallels have been drawn between wolves and humans from the perspective of their social organisation. Therefore, studying wolves may well shed light on the evolutionary origins of complex human cognition and, in particular, on the role that cooperation played in its development. Humans closely share their lives with millions of dogs – the domesticated form of wolves. Biologically, wolves and dogs can be considered to be the same species; yet only dogs are suitable living companions in human homes, highlighting the importance of cognitive and emotional differences between the two forms. The behaviour of wolves and dogs largely depends on the environment the animals grew up and live in. This book reviews more than 50 years of research on the differences and similarities of wolves and dogs. Beyond the socio-ecology, the work explores different theories about when and how the domestication of wolves might have started and which behaviours and cognitive abilities might have changed during this process. Readers will discover how these fascinating animals live with their conspecifics in their social groups, how they approach and solve problems in their daily lives and how they s

Social Behaviour with Humans, to seek out, and stay in physical contact with humans (whether bonded, familiar, or strangers) more than wolves, even if in some cases this is associated with higher behavioural and physiological signals of stress. Pilot results also suggest that dogs show more greeting, tail wagging, and submissiv

Social Cognition Part I: Communication with Humans, erative and dogs may just be more willing to follow human ‘commands’ from an early age, while wolves can learn to follow them with age probably as a result of positive experience (learning). The propensity to communicate with humans is also rather similar in wolves and dogs, if more basic difference

Social Cognition Part II: Social Learning and Cooperation,rs, and have a basic understanding of the role of their partner in cooperative interactions. However, the studies show that while wolves cooperate successfully with conspecifics as well as with human partners, dogs only succeeded with humans. This suggests that the dogs’ failure to cooperate with co

Physical Cognition Part I: Problem Solving and Its Correlates, acities, wolves should be in general better problem-solvers. With regard to inhibitory control, dogs outperform wolves in situations where humans are involved, potentially because they are more sensitive t

Domestication Hypotheses Relating to Behaviour and Cognition: Which Are Supported by the Current Das are less tolerant than dominant wolves in the feeding context and subordinate dogs (but not subordinate wolves) avoid potential conflicts where possible. To some extent a similar pattern emerges with humans, where dogs appear to be more easily inhibited and more likely to comply with the demands w
