Epilogue,In 1987 Shockley learned that he had prostate cancer but choose not to undergo surgery. Within a year, the cancer had metastasized to his bones and he began receiving treatments at the Mayo Clinic, although to little avail. He died at home on the morning of August 12, 1989, aged 79.
