Who Writes for the Trees?: ,, the Dominican Forest, and Its Parrotsrests to the ecology and wholeness of her home island of Dominica is on display in her last novel. This chapter reads . alongside Rhys’s correspondence late in her life with her Dominican compatriot Phyllis Shand Allfrey, an activist for political and environmental issues on the island.

Encryption as Transmission: The Secret Gardens of y, in the descendent. Rhys’s influences occupy her novel as secrets and include Frances Hodgson Burnett’s . (1911) and Daphne du Maurier’s . (1938). Beyond looking at intertextuality as such, we focus on the unique mode of literary influence that Rhys models through her encryption of the (violent) secrets of other women’s writing.
