描述I have always been fascinated with engineering. From Roman bridges and jumbo jets to steam engines and CD players, it is the privilege of the en gineer to combine scientific insights and technical possibilities into useful and elegant products. Engineers get a great deal of satisfaction from the usefulness and beauty of their designs. Some of these designs have a major impact on our daily lives, others enable further scientific insights or shift limits of technology. The successful engineer is familiar with the scientific basis of the field and the technology of the components, and has an eye for the envisioned applications. For example, to build an airplane, one had better understand the physics of motion, the structural properties of alu minum, and the size of passengers. And the physics of motion requires a mastery of mathematics, in particular calculus. Computers are a marvel of modern engineering. They come in a wide variety and their range of applications seems endless. One of the charac teristics that makes computers different from other engineering products is their programmability. Dishwashers have some limited programming capa is not the key part of the device. Their

Regular Expressions,h an infinite set of states can be physically realized. In this chapter, we explore the class of languages that can be accepted with finite-state machines, the class of .. We study several ways of defining regular languages (right-linear grammars, transition graphs, regular expressions, and finite-s

The Halting Problem and Formal Proofs, that parses an expression and, on the fly, evaluates the expression. In this chapter, we consider extensions of the grammar for expressions, essentially extending it to a “real” programming language, and conclude that it is then no longer possible to write a function for evaluating all interesting a

Some Programming Heuristics, conjurers: we did argue the correctness of our programs but we never explained where they came from — like rabbits, they were pulled out of the magician’s hat. But a professional programmer is not a conjurer. A programmer should be able to explain how the program was derived, because program design

Efficiency of Programs, for one over the other. By far the most relevant criterion for distinguishing between the programs is the time it takes to execute them. One has to be careful in these matters, though, as illustrated by the following example. Assume that we have two programs PA and PB that each solve our programmin

Functional Programming, that operate on variables; one of the basic operations is the assignment statement, which causes the value of an expression to be stored in a variable. It is the only statement that changes the state spanned by the variables. This programming style is called imperative programming.
